The restaurant that would eventually be known as Space 220 was originally announced at the 2017 D23 Expo <ref name="open"> https://www.wdwmagic.com/dining/space-restaurant/news/16jul2017-new-space-restaurant-dining-experience-at-epcots-future-world.htm </ref>. At this time, Imagineer Tom Fitzgerald stated:

At the time of the initial announcement, Disney also announced that the new restaurant would be located between the Mission: Space and Test Trak pavilions, and it would be operated by the Patina Restaurant Group, which also operates [[Tutto Italia]] and [[Via Napoli]] in [[Epcot's]] [[Italy]] pavilion <ref name="open"/>.

In July, 2018, construction began on Epcot's new space themed restaurant <ref> https://www.wdwmagic.com/dining/space-restaurant/news/17jul2018-photo---epcots-space-themed-restaurant-ground-clearing-gets-underway.htm </ref>. Although work continued over the next year, work on the restaurant continued. Finally, on August 25, 2019, Disney announced that the restaurant would be named Space 220, and would be included in Epcot's new "World Discovery" neighborhood <ref> https://www.wdwmagic.com/dining/space-restaurant/news/25aug2019-epcots-space-themed-restaurant-named-space-220.htm </ref>. When the new restaurant's name was reveled, Disney explained that the dining experience would be set in a a space station 220 miles above earth. To get to the station, guests board a special elevator and journey high above the planet.

Although originally slated for a 2020 opening, Space 220 remained unopened throughout that year. Initially delayed due to construction difficulties, the restaurant was further pushed back due to COVID 19.

Finally, on September 20, 2021. Space 220 opened to the public. On hand for the Grand Opening were executives from the Patina Restaurant Group, Delaware North, Disney, and Mickey and Minnie Mouse <ref> https://www.wdwmagic.com/dining/space-restaurant/news/25aug2019-epcots-space-themed-restaurant-named-space-220.htm </ref>.

		+	Space 220 is a table service restaurant located near Mission: Space in Epcot's World Discovery neighborhood. After entering the restaurant, guests are issued their boarding pass which allows them to board the space elevators to the Centauri Space Station, which is located 220 miles above Earth. When lifting off in the elevators, guests can look out and see Earth shrinking beneath them as they ascend.

		+	After exiting the elevators, guests walk down a hallway which holds the restaurant's spinning "Grow Zone". Inside, various produces that are served in the restaurant are featured. At the end of the hallway, guests reach the restaurant's dining room. At the rear of the room, large windows give guests a panoramic view of Earth from space. Depending on the time of day, the view out the windows change to reflect the conditions on Earth. In addition to the main dining room, there is also a lounge which features its own menu, and is available to walk ups.
